Choosing the right Father's day gift basket

Father's Day is a day set aside out of the year to recognize the fathers who do so much for their families throughout the year and throughout a lifetime.  The holiday all began back in 1909 when Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington, proposed the idea of a "father's day" in order to honor her father, William Smart.

William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child.  He was then left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington  State.  As Mrs. Dodd grew into adulthood, she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent and wanted to give him a special day to recognize his achievements and sacrifices.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington.  At about the same time in various towns and cities across America other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day."  In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of creating a national holiday for Father's Day.  Finally in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

Since that day, Father's Day has been observed every year in June as not only a day to honor your father, but to also recognize all men who act as a father figure such as stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends.

The holiday generally includes activities revolved around your father and his likes and interests.  Many people go on picnics, camping, out to eat at a favorite restaurant, fishing, or any other activity that usually involves the whole family but is something that is especially enjoyed by your father.

Giving gifts to your dad has also become an integral part of observing Father's Day.  However, perhaps you've already given him ties, shirts, flowers, tools, golf clubs, cologne, and maybe even gone as far as to purchase a gift card so that he can pick out his own gift.  Perhaps you are out of ideas and are looking for that special something that will tell him you love and appreciate him in a way that no other gift will.  A gift basket from GiftBasketsDeluxe.com is the perfect gift for such an occasion.
